| What is Vortaro?Vortaro is an interface for driving Esperanto/Other Language dictionary files, and is generally set-up to manage dictionary database programs. There is no practical limit to the amount of words a dictionary file can hold apart from the usual constraints of system speed, memory, and so on. Vortaro is flexible when it comes to combining and adding to dictionaries - so it is quite practical, for example, for a user to write a specialised vocabulary - any lists generated by Vortaro will be hosted on this site if passed on. Other Vortaro users can then import them to their existing dictionaries. All word-lists carried here are in the public domain. Supported Languages:Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish An option to set to languages other than the above is supported, however use may
involve sorting or other vagaries. Download |

Download the Dictionary file for the desired language, if it's available. Unzip and import to Vortaro.
If you would like to start a dictionary for your language you can download the interface. When Vortaro is first run it will create an empty dictionary and allow you to set your language. Your resultant files can be exported to a format compatible with almost all database programs (*.csv).
I would like to thank Alwin Loeckx for past help and feedback. As far as I know, his EspDict for DOS is a pioneering work regarding Esperanto dictionaries available on the web. He has also supplied the first big word list suitable for use with Vortaro - Dutch with 72,500 words.
A program called Ergane was used in preparing the English and Dutch dictionary files. It is a very useful program from Gerard van Wilgen. Information from the Ergane site is included in the Vortaro Help file.
