Why learn Esperanto?

The world is a big place but you can help make it smaller.

Wouldn't it be good if you could speak to people all over the world and really get to know them? If you learn another language you can usually only use it in a small number of countries at most. Not so with Esperanto. There are Esperanto speakers all over the world. It's a wonderful way to travel and get beyond the tourist’s eye view.

Esperanto is easy to learn because there are no irregularities. If you've tried to learn another language before, you will know how much extra time and effort those take up. With Esperanto you will soon be able genuinely to express yourself, not just order a beer or ask the way. Furthermore you will be communicating as equals, not as native speaker and disadvantaged learner. And because you understand in greater depth how another language works, it can help you later if you try to learn other languages again.

Esperanto is the internationalist way of doing things. A little bit more international understanding and broader outlook on the world would be no bad thing in the modern age. Recent surveys show only 19% of people in Britain consider themselves capable of having a conversation in somebody else's language.
