Why not visit Scotland?Scotland is not on the edge of the universe; only on the edge of Europe! It is scenically outstanding with a rich culture and the most romantic of histories. Scotland has an undeserved reputation for bad weather; in fact, the climate is much milder in the winter than the latitude would make one suspect. It has the most splendid of gardens, castles galore and a galaxy of country houses. Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is called the Athens of the North because of its classical architecture and dominating castle; it also resembles Salzburg The Highlands and Islands are another world: emptiness, scenic splendour, solitude, the Gaelic language; and a Romanticism, which has influenced writers and composers throughout the world. Scotland has also made its contribution to Esperanto especially Esperanto literature. William Auld, the greatest living Esperanto writer, lives in Scotland. Scotland looks out towards the wider world: it feels more European than England and its sons and daughters are part of a huge Diaspora which still remembers its Scottish roots.
