American Indian Theme for Dunblane

The principal speaker during the Scottish Study Weekend (22-23rd September 2001) will be David Thornell.

David was born in Washington DC; he is at present studying modern British history at the London School of Economics. Previously he studied at Cornell and the School of Oriental and African Studies.

He is not a specialist concerning American Indians; but is partly of Indian descent and has worked for Indian political and cultural organisations.

In his lectures he will attempt to explain genuine Indian culture and will endeavour to disprove the stereotypes of Westerns. In other words, he will clarify the truth behind the myths.

David will emphasise cultural diversity, the geographical spread of Indians, and the persecution of these peoples. The whole question of Indian rights will be explored; and this will lead to obsevations concerning the broader problem of suppressed groups in the contemporary world.

David will be responsible for the principal theme; but there also will be a slide lecture about Tallinn (David Bisset), a fascinating translation exercise (Hugh Reid), Entertainment, Seminars, discussion, a Diservo; and also time to walk round the cathedral close!

To make things easier for participants from the North and South it will be possible to stay on the Friday and/or Sunday evenings at Scottish Churches House. Relax! Have that break you deserve!
