Andrina

The first Book published by SEA

The 62 pages long book ‘Andrina’ contains translated works of George Mackay Brown, the eminent Scottish poet and novelist (1921- 1996). GMB was born in Stromness in Orkney where he lived for most of his life. It is  therefore not surprising that most of his work was influenced by the traditional culture and life on these  islands.

Details of events and complete understanding of a hard-working, independent people, whose deep emotions appear as lack of sentiment to a stranger, are interwoven with vivid descriptions of the landscape and seascape, thus producing strong images of the life on these  isolated  islands.

Included in the book are three well chosen novels: Andrina, The Masked Fisherman and The Wireless Set, masterly translated by Prof. Stanley Nisbet, Professor Emeritus of  Glasgow University.

The poetry section of the book contains 21 poems, translated by Chris Long, a poet himself,  and the original essay ‘Panoj kaj Fiŝoj’ (Loaves and Fishes). The Essay is a reflection on sources, themes, structures of the poems and influences of other poets on GMB’s poetry.

John Hoyne’s compositor’s skills and a very good original portrait of GMB, taken by Gunnie Moberg, enhance  the  appearance of the book..

The selling price is ?4.50 ( P&P included).
