Galaxy of talent for Scottish Congress!
President Chris Gledhill and his team have just announced the speakers for the Congress at St. Andrews; they have assembled a wealth of talent which should help to ensure that participants will have a stimulating weekend. The overseas guest speaker will be Atilio Orellana Rojas from Argentina, but now Director of the Esperanto Institute at The Hague. Atilio is known throughout the world for his Direct Method expertise; in fact, he has just returned from a five week assignment in Australia. During the Congress he will be utilising the Direct Method for teaching; and lecturing concerning important linguistic themes. He is a language dynamo; and will motivate all whom he meets. David Kelso, the Director of Development of EAB, and a retired Chief Inspector of Higher Education, will lecture about Life-long Learning; we can anticipate sharp insights leavened with wit. Don Lord, retired Lecturer in Esperanto at Liverpool University, will be lecturing and teaching during the Congress. Don loves words and speaks with elegance and humour. He has been a frequent visitor to Scottish Esperanto events during the past year. One of our Scottish Esperanto gurus, Hugh Reid, will be speaking about the brain, mind and reality. Do not be afraid of the theme: Hugh is the clearest of thinkers, and explains his topics with exemplary clarity. We are pleased that Graham Blakey from Manchester will be lecturing on the theme of Jewish influences on the young Zamenhof. There is much academic interest at present concerning this theme. Ed Robertson, the editor of Esperanto en Skotlando, is well known for his ability to elucidate fascinating themes; so his lecture with the enigmatic title "The Mountain of Languages" will undoubtedly be worth hearing. All the lectures are, of course, in Esperanto; but let me emphasise that the whole weekend will be an invaluable learning process even for the tyro! You may not understand everything; but you will be amazed at how much progress you will make during a few days. There are also teaching, cultural, turistic and gourmet elements in the total programme! The dates are 24-27 May 2002, and booking forms are available from Tom Neil at tomneil@tinyworld.co.uk if you have lost yours or have just read this article. Early booking helps and encourages the Local Committee!
