Glasgow Society celebrates Zamenhof's Birthday

A well attended meeting on 9th December 2003 celebrated this traditional event. The format of these occasions is never uniform; this evening was a stimulating and happy experience.

The main item was a fascinating translation exercise led by Jean Bisset. She selected a festive passage from Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens; cut it into small sections; and set the members to work in translating the section given to them. When the task was finished, the passage was read aloud; and the results were eminently satisfactory. After some editing this contribution to Esperanto translated literature will hopefully appear on this site.

John Francis then challenged everyone by a masterly summary of the evolutionary process before Zamenhof finally launched his new language.

The literary theme was continued when Charlie Dornan read poems by William Auld and Julio Baghy; and David Bisset read a few paragraphs from the as yet unpublished Auld translation of Dickens' Pickwick Papers.

Before the festive board was attacked, Bill Billings delighted everyone by showing that in spite of the passing of the years his voice still has a quality which can rivet us all.

 Dr. Zamenhof continues to inspire!
