Hugh Martin (1931 - 2001)

Scottish Esperantists are saddened by the news of the death in Birmingham of Revd Hugh Martin, M.A., B.D., a former president both of the Glasgow Esperanto Society and of the Scottish Esperanto Federation (now the Scottish Esperanto Association). Hugh also served for two terms of office, first in the 1950/60s and more recently from 1996 until 1999, as editor of the Association's bulletin "Esperanto en Skotlando".

A brilliant linguist, Hugh by virtue of his calling had a commanding knowledge of Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and became further fluent in Gaelic, Arabic and Icelandic. Over and above all these, he was convinced that Esperanto had everything to offer in overcoming language barriers and was a strong advocate of its adoption as the International Language.

His many friends in Scotland offer sincere condolences to his wife Jess and their family.
