Scottish Studrondo challenges and educatesPhoto GalleryThe principal speaker during the Scottish Study Weekend (22-23rd September 2001) was David Thornell. David was born in Washington DC; he is at present studying modern British history at the London School of Economics. Previously he studied at Cornell and the School of Oriental and African Studies. He is not a specialist concerning American Indians; but is partly of Indian descent and has worked for Indian political and cultural organisations. In his 3 lectures he cogently explained genuine Indian culture and endeavoured to disprove the stereotypes of Westerns and other misconceptions. In other words, he clarified the truth behind the myths. David emphasised cultural diversity, the geographical spread of Indians, and the persecution of these peoples. He boldly dealt with the whole American continent, exploring the whole question of Indian rights and how they were treated by the colonial powers. This lead to observations concerning the broader problem of suppressed groups in the contemporary world. The lectures were delivered in exemplary Esperanto, and were reinforced by intensive group study. His replies to a multitude of questions showed his clear logical approach to the whole subject. David was responsible for the principal theme; but there was also a slide lecture about the extraordinary medieval city of Tallinn, capital of Estonia and an important Hanseatic town by David Bisset, a fascinating translation exercise brilliantly led by Hugh Reid, entertainment, social interaction, vigorous discussions, a Diservo, sessions for beginners, gastronomic delights; and also time to walk round the cathedral close! There was moreover a meeting of the Scottish Committee, and the Publicity Committee of the Esperanto Association of Britain. During the weekend Anne Eyre celebrated a Very Special Birthday. David Kelso said a few appropriate words and there was a ceremonial cutting of a birthday cake. During many years Anne has provided first class tuition for many learners of Esperanto; and she has indicated that she has no intention of retiring! 33 people participated , 7 of whom arrived at Scottish Churches House the day before. Next year the study Weekend will take place on 7-8 August with accommodation available on the 6th.
