Sun shines at Aberdour

The weather felt like spring as 18 Esperantists met once more in the Boat Club, Aberdour, on Saturday 8th December 2001 to celebrate the birthday of Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto.

Once again those who had not been there before were amazed at the situation of the venue beside the medieval harbour, offering spectacular views of the islands in the River Forth.

David Hannah, the organiser, acted as MC for a stimulating programme. There were 2 guest speakers: Viktor Mensah from Togoland and Don Lord from Cheshire.

Viktor spoke about the origins of the Esperanto movement in his land; and then answered a score of questions about Esperanto there and life in Togoland. It really is the green capital of Africa!

Don spoke about Zamenhof, and surprised most of us. He revealed that Zamenhof was a dedicated Zionist when he was at university, and that at first he had conceived Esperanto as an alternative to the use of Modern Hebrew, a project which he felt was unrealistic. The vision of Zamenhof soon widened, and he left Zionism behind; but his Biblical background, perhaps subconsciously, impinged upon certain facets of Esperanto. Don made the interesting point that the real story of Zamenhof's intellectual evolution is much more exciting than the myths which are often perpetuated.

The Zamenhof Festival finished with the cutting of his birthday cake, abundant refreshments and vigorous Esperanto chat!

If you have never visited the Boat House before, try and come next year. And, by the way, Aberdour has a medieval church and castle, unusual shops, a marvellous seascape; and provides the chance to join the Scottish Committee for lunch before the festivities.

The Committee put in 3 hours of hard work before relaxing with the others; but that is why committees exist!.
