Travel. To reach Lanark by public transport, your best bet is from Glasgow Central Station (Lower Level): travel time about 50 minutes through an unforgettable slice of Scotland’s social history ........ the same service stops in Motherwell.
From Edinburgh, you can either take train to Motherwell, then to Lanark; or picturesque bus journey from Waterloo Place bus station: travel time for both a little over an hour. If you’re really into trains, you might find a train to Carstairs Junction, then a bus to Lanark (and get your Pathfinder badge when you arrive, if you arrive).
Lanark is also connected with Carluke and Uddingston by train, and with Biggar by bus, if you want to stay somewhere a little different.
By car, from the south, leave M74 at junction 12 (Douglas), follow A70 (signposted Edinburgh) then, after Hyndford Bridge, A73 (signposted Lanark).
From the north, leave M74 at Junction 7 (Larkhall), follow A72/A71 (Edinburgh) , then after Garrion Bridge, A73 for Lanark.
Accommodation. There are lots of lovely hotels and B&B around Lanark, but only a handful in the town itself. So, if you have a car, no problem, but if not, get cracking ! Best source for accommodation is www.visitscotland.com , selecting “Glasgow & Clyde Valley”, then “Lanark”. Failing that, try a search for “accommodation, Lanark”. Local Tourist Office - 01555 661661. If you are looking farther afield ...... Biggar is about 12 miles/ 20 km from Lanark, Carluke about 8 km, Carstairs about 6 km.
What else ? The venue for Friday and Saturday is the historic Tolbooth, right in the High Street, the centre of Lanark. On Sunday we decamp to the Village Hall in New Lanark (about 3 km away), to save a lot of toing and froing. If enough people are staying on, we can organise an excursion on the Monday (18 June) but nothing fixed yet.
