Z-Festival 2006: Paul Gubbins praises Auld the Playwright
It
seemed strange not to be in Aberdour, but the Unitarian Church in
Glasgow (near the Mitchell Library) was an ideal venue; and change
can be stimulating!
Dr.
Paul Gubbins was our guest speaker; and he arrived from Congleton in
Cheshire by train, and on time! That was a good start!
His
theme was a tribute to the late William Auld: it was a detailed study
of the only play Bill ever wrote: As if Birds build
a Nest; originally: Kvazaŭ birdoj konstruas
Neston. Paul particularly praised the language of the short
play; but also said that it worked well as theatre. He reminded us of
Bill’s acting talents; and expressed the hope that the play would
be staged again soon.
Paul’s
Esperanto was, as always, impeccable. Dr. Zamenhof was only mentioned
obliquely on this occasion; but the living language is, of course,
his greatest monument.
Eighteen
persons attended this happy festive occasion, including Marek from
Poland. There was food, drink and repartee in abundance.
The
Good Doctor once more was truly honoured!
